The LVW-5005 DVD Recorder came with a list of recommended brands for each type of disc, and they are all different in all categories. Some brands are recommended for CDs, some for DVDs, etc. They are not the same in any catagory. Most of the ones I bought were not on the list, because I couldn't find those listed anywhere in my neighborhood here in California.
Some worked before, but are not working well now. Some have never worked, and some are failing intermittently. The INVALID DISC message comes up on both units often, but when it comes up on the LVW-5005 unit the DISC eject feature will not eject.
The open close door stays shut and says it is open, but sticks and keeps trying to reread the disc. You actually have to tip the machine down to let gravity help, and then turn it on and off and on and off and it finally opens and drops out the invalid disc. The LVC-9016G unit says 'change disc', or gets stuck on 'Preparing'. Sometimes it prepares, and then I can actually record, but when I try to load it later. This too is INTERMITTENT. GOD I HATE THAT WORD!!!!
I am not good a taking machines apart, and I have a MAC system 10.5 computer, and the firmware update seems to be geared to the WINDOWS PC. Is there anything I can do. Also IS THERE A LIST OF PREFERRED BRANDS of the media for the LVC-9016G model.
It may be the same as the list for the LVW-5005 unit, except the that unit is supposed to record on CDs as well. NOT SURE None are working consistantly. The other idea that I had is that the newer DVD-R and DVD-RW or the DVD+R and DVD+RW discs have a heavier technology and these older burners (2 years makes it older, I guess.) and seem to no longer like them. The 6 hour SLP I always set them to record on in the past, may no longer be valid. The 4x, 8X 16X etc. May not work either.
Since I don't understand what that means, and we only have access to what is available to buy, I am at a loss there too. I am logical, but not technically educated in this technology. I come at this with psychology, not technology.:-) I have the LVC-9016G for 2 years, and the other bought at COSTCO only a year ago. Is $300 worth of equipment already obsolete?
I have not hacked or touched anything. I may need to buy another lense cleaning disc. I have a memorex one, but when I put that in it said INVALID DISC, and will not work either. Won't read or spin.
I am frustrated. Candy this can be due to invalid media.all types will not burn in this unit.good success.meder's tv service Answered on Nov 28, 2012. You have 2 choices here, you can either submit the unit to an authorised service centre (or similar), obtain a quote on the likely cause(s) of the problem (which to me sounds like the digital control circuit has failed partially to the DVD deck and/or corrupt firmware which is not possible to upgrade), the potential costs involved, and so on, you can then make a decision based on the unit's age and overall condition as to whether it's economical to repair or not. The point is, the unit is repairable, but it could prove expensive.
The other option you have, is to keep the unit as a VCR (which is cheaper than repair to the DVD), and later on, buy a new DVD player/recorder (as required). The cost of the repairs to your existing unit vs. Buying a new one could be significant. Personally, does the DVD deck play any shop-bought movies? If not, don't bother getting it repaired. Buy a new unit (but keep your existing unit as a VCR while it works).
Answered on Apr 19, 2011. I had this problem, and found that the cause was that the mechanism that lowers the disk spindle to allow the drawer to open was not strong enough to overcome the magnet that clamps the spindle into position when it it is closed. The following procedure fixed the problem: Unplug the unit, and remove its outer cover (eight screws, four on the sides and four on the back) Remove the thin metal cover over the DVD drive (four screws) There is a round metal cover on the top of the drive. It is glued in place. Carefully pry it loose.
Be careful not to bend it. The spindle clamp assembly is beneath this cover. It consists of a plastic housing and a metal insert that holds a black fabric gasket and a small, donut-shaped magnet. Remove the entire assembly. The metal insert is held inside the plastic housing by three bayonet-style prongs.
Rotate the insert to free it, then remove it. Remove the black fabric gasket and the magnet from the metal insert. Here's where it gets a little strange.
The problem is that the magnet is too powerful. Estimate its power by placing it on any iron or steel surface and note how much force is required to dislodge it. In order to reduce its power, hold it over a range burner or torch for a minute or so. (Honestly, this amount of time is a guess. I 'overcooked' my magnet to the point that it lost virtually all its power. The repair, however, was still successful.) Check the magnet's power again by placing it on the same iron or steel object. It should be significantly weaker.
Reassemble the spindle clamp. Drop it back into place in the plastic top cover of the drive. Replace the thin, round metal cover over it. (In my case, the old glue was still good enough to hold it in place. The spindle clamp will not pop out of the top of the drive- it is held down by gravity and by magnetic attraction to the spindle.) Plug the unit in and test the drawer opening again.
If it still strains but does not open, disassemble the spindle clamp assembly again and 'cook' the magnet some more, then reassemble it. After verifying that the drawer opens normally, replace the metal cover over the drive and the outer cover of the unit.

I tried every suggestion I could find online to no avail. I opened the case, took the top off the drive, and manually removed my finalized disc that has been stuck inside. The little gasket thing was sticky, someone else mentioned, and as a result, the disc was almost glued down. I dabbed baby powder on the little gasket to cancel the stickiness. I reassembled it and still couldn't get the tray to open, but at least I had my movie. I had tried banging on the top above the tray when pressing eject as someone else mentioned, but that did not work.
So I tried this suggestion of leaning the machine forward and down. Fiskars telescoping tree pruner manual. At first, it didn't work. But then I did it again while tapping on the back of the machine while it was tipped forward, and then out it came! You weren't kidding about having to grab it fast, because it did try to go right back in again. I was worried at first because the tray kept going in and out by itself then and wouldn't stop.
I turned it off and back on again, ejected it and inserted a blank disc. It formatted it and did fine. I ejected it and put it back in again several times, and it seems to work fine now without tipping it forward. Thanks so much for the tip!
I was about to give up and try to take it somewhere for repair. It's been a fairly faithful unit for many years, so I'm glad it's working again! Mine was manufactured in 2004. This was the Lite-On LVW-5005X that was altered with firmware to be an ILO with region free and multi-length recording.

This was the Lite-On LVW-5005X that was altered with firmware to be an ILO with region free and multi-length recording. My tray was also sticking but I managed to solve the problem. I can also tell you why slapping the unit worked. The reason that it sticks (at least in my case) is that the magnet which holds the reading head upwards becomes stronger with use. Thus the reading head will not go down to its place and the tray can't slide out. When you slap the unit the magnet lets the reading head fall down and the tray opens. I solved my problem by taking the dvd recorder apart (taking note of how I dismantled it so as to reassemble afterwards).
When disassembled I put some tape (electrical tape as it is a bit thicker) over the magnet. This weakened the strength of the magnet and allowed the tray to open normally. It makes some noise when reading the dvd, but the tray always opens and I can read and burn dvd's once again with no harm done. Posted on Dec 27, 2007.
I got a refurbed unit. I had a problem with the video tape section.
Manual Muscle Test Grades
It would not take in a tape, so I held it in, and it got stuck. Since the tape section was stuck, the DVD side would not operate. I took it apart. Turns out that the roof bridge over the VCR section was loose, and when I re-attached it, the tape was stablilized enough to eject properly.
I have a new problem - how do I get it to record in progressive mode instead of interlaced mode? (tried to copy a tape to DVD to be stored on my PC. I saw heavy interlacing, so I could not keep that.) Posted on Apr 11, 2008.

Keep on viewing your old taped movies plus all your new DVDs with the same machine with the video tape recorder included with the Lite On LVC-9016G. Lack of reliable Closed Captioning Very easy to set up, excellent video quality output. The common theme with this model LVC-9016G from LiteOn is that it is unreliable to produce a accurate Analog Closed Captioning output. The Later models such as the LiteOn DD-A100, LVW-5115GHC, DD-A510 all have overcome this closed caption problem, they are not Combo Models. One other problem is that the LiteOn DD-A100 and DD-A510 models do not have a cooling fan and they tend to produce a lot of heat.
If you are going to do a lot of DVD analog editing over a long period of time your best bet is the LiteOn LVW-5115GHC since it produces a accurate Closed Caption and does not overheat since it has a cooling fan. Other wise the LVC-9016G it is a great Analog Recorder. Verified purchase: Yes Condition: Pre-owned. Awesome machine (with in its limitations) The original dvd drives require quality DVD+R discs, DVD-R discs don't work well, but one of the awesome things about these machines is how easy they accept pc style ide dvd drives.
My two favorite drives to swap in are the LITEON LH-20A1P, & the SONY DRU-120C. The 9016 combo recorders have plenty of room for the pc style drives, unlike the 5005 recorders witch are a very tight fit. The VHS tape side of the 9016 rock solid with a strong motor, rewind is very fast. A good rule of thumb for vcrs is if you have to look in the box to tell if the machine is in there, it's cheaply built, but if you pick up the box, and its heavy, it's a well built machine, and the 9016 is a heavy well built machine. Verified purchase: Yes.
